RIM Blackberry Pearl 8110 is the latest model in the Pearl series next to that of Blackberry Pearl 8120, an all in one gadget. This cute and small smart phone has been released, mainly focusing on the consumer market. Blackberry has become one of the office essentials now a days and RIM has also kept in mind the fashion conscious users and has tasted success.

RIM is launching the new device with several slightly tweaked changes here and there with different specifications. This might be a little confusing for you as they all look alike. Anyways, we are here to help you out. The key difference between the three flavors of blackberry pearl is that 8100 has neither Wi-Fi nor the GPS capability, while 8110 has GPS but no Wi-Fi and 8120 has Wi-Fi but not GPS.

Design:

Blackberry Pearl 8110 gives you a lighter feel when held. It comes with the full QWERTY keyboard. This business focused phone comes in three attractive colours such as blue, pink and the usual black. 8110 has a larger and colourful screen that can display up to 65000 colours with a resolution of 240×260 pixels. The thumb wheel is replaced by a white roller ball which looks very much similar to that of a pearl and gets lit up when in use. This track ball navigation facility increases the ease of use. The keyboard is backlit, helping you at the darker places. Since the keyboard supports the SureType keyboard software, it acts as the ideal one for the creation of mails and messages.

With the dimension of 107×50x14mm and weighing 91grams, this phone has just the right size and weight.

Multimedia:

This Blackberry Pearl 8110 PDA phone has a unified blackberry media menu for all the multimedia features which is of course very handy. This phone can play for you the music and video in various compressed formats. It uses streaming media based on the MPEG-4 and H.263 technology. The media player that is used is very user friendly. All the other menus and navigations are designed very well and in an ease of use manner. The internal speaker quality of this phone is not so impressive. The speaker independent voice dialing works well.

As a messaging device:

RIM Blackberry Pearl 8110 sports almost all the communication features that you would be expecting. It includes facilities for mailing, SMS, MMS, camera, video, GPS and of course the calling facility. You may have a great time communicating, once you get used to all these facilities. The on-board GPS functionality is the feature that shows 8110 unique from the other Pearl models as this can be used as a full fledged navigational device.

Memory:

This blackberry phone has the micro SD card slot which will be a very useful one, in case you need to use the video recording function of 8110. RIM has equipped 8120 with 64mb of memory which is a good amount of memory for your day to day usage.

Camera:
RIM Blackberry Pearl 8110 smartphone has a two mega pixel camera with 5xzoom, flash and video recording facility. It also sports the self-portrait mirror. The quality of the pictures cannot be said as excellent though Blackberry Pearl was the first blackberry to feature a built-in camera. It is good if the subject is still, but you would end up getting a blurred image in case it is moving. It does have the shutter lag problem which asks you to hold the set straight after you have pressed the shutter button. This has proven that this smart phone is completely consumer centric.

Connectivity:

One disappointing feature that 8110 shares with the other previous models of Blackberry pearl is that, it still does not support a good browser. This can be listed as one of the greatest disadvantage of Blackberry 8110 smart phone. It comes with a built-in RIM modem to gain access to the internet. It has the wireless mailing facility in which you can perform everything that is involved with mailing such as composing, sending, forwarding and you can send mails with attachments as well. It also supports the famous instant messengers like Yahoo and Gtalk. It does not support 3G which means that internet browsing can become sluggish at times. One happy factor is that you can POP email from ten different accounts automatically.

High speed data transfer is possible with the help of the GPRS and EDGE technology. The phone can be connected using a cable in order to exchange data between both the systems.

The GPS facility:

The Vodafone version of 8110 comes with the Telmap Navigation software and a special Facebook function. This GPS receiver allows you to have a full turn by turn navigation rather than you having to enter the location each time. As a bonus, you are provided with Vodafone’s Sat Nav service subscription for a year. The real time navigation for the Vodafone Satnav is being provided by Telmap, which is applicable in UK only, and hence when you are outside Europe, you will have to toggle to the Google maps. The TeleNav 5.1 is used when it comes to the T-mobile.

Other applications:

The other small applications like that of the address book and calendar are functional and when it comes to the other features, 8110 is very similar to that of Blackberry Pearl 8120 except for the Wi-Fi capability. It also supports a lot of fun games that runs on J2ME. Pearl 8110 has a built-in document viewer which aids you in viewing the documents that are in word, excel and PowerPoint formats. Facebook fans, here is a happy news for you; this model does have this feature in it.

Battery:

Blackberry Pearl 8110 smartphone comes with 900mAh lithium ion battery which provides you with 4 hours of talk time and a stand-by of 360 hours.

RIM Blackberry Pearl 8110 does a good job with commendable mailing and mapping facilities. But since the competition is cold, it needs to upgrade itself in a lot of areas to prove it and keep up its success stories.

This set is available for free with T-mobile and Vodafone on monthly contract.
