RIM Blackberry Pearl 8120 Smartphone Review

The Blackberry Pearl 8120 is the one belonging to RIM’s famous Blackberry Pearl series. This smart phone is designed to perform all the essential things that you can perform using a handheld device. It is a phone with much advanced multimedia and Wi-Fi capabilities. After the big hit of Blackberry Pearl, 8120 is also expected to produce similar results. The Pearl series also includes the 8100 and 8110.

Design:

When it comes to the cosmetic refinements of RIM Blackberry Pearl 8120, this candy bar set has come in purple like blue colour, but in case you do not like it, then the black version is also available for you. This smart phone is having a high quality screen and an easy to use QWERTY keyboard on a stylish layout. The display is much on the smaller side, looking almost square. The display is sharp, bright and clear enough to read the emails. Its screen has five main shortcuts for you to choose from such as, a secondary email inbox, a dual SMS and MMS alert, Messages, Address book, Calendar and below these is the standard Blackberry icon which you can click to access the familiar Blackberry screen that is known to you.

Since Blackberry 8120 smartphone has the Sure Type keyboard software, typing in it is real fun. This software actually predicts the word that you are typing, initially you may find it tough, but once you get used to it, you would feel that you can not do without it. But still if you do not find it very comfortable, then you can shift to the Multitap way. This highly capable device does not weigh as heavy as its features. The metal-like finish gives you a lovely feel when the set is held in hands. It has a small track ball for navigational purpose. The auto scroll bar could have been implemented to increase the ease of use. Towards the left and the right of the track ball is the Blackberry menu and back keys and towards their left and right are the call and end keys respectively. This set also sports two convenience keys, one in the right edge and another on the left edge. These convenience keys can be used to launch which ever application you access often.

Connectivity:

RIM’s Blackberry Pearl 8120 offers you Wi-Fi, GPRS and GPRS/Edge connectivity. The Wi-Fi services are dependant on the network provider’s available services. You can enjoy high speed data transfer in the GPRS and EDGE technology. 8120 lacks the 3G facility, but you would not miss it certainly. The most exiting feature of this 8120 smart phone is its mailing capabilities. The pop-ups appeared as and when necessary. The instant messaging feature is also available; using which you can have an online chat with the other compatible users.

The wireless radio icon of Blackberry now allows you to manage all the connections that are available, where you can choose between Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the mobile network or turn on all at once. This handset has an HTML internet browser with RIM built-in wireless modem. To enable the users to transfer the files from the other devices quickly and easily, RIM has added the wireless Bluetooth and USB port.

Multimedia:

Though Blackberry Pearl 8120 is a business oriented phone, it also has options to keep the user entertained. The phone has a built-in media player, using which you can enjoy audio and video. In order to have personal listening experience, you can use the head phones else the loud speakers are also available.

Pearl 8120 has built-in Blackberry maps that are not presented in a very detailed manner, but would be a useful inclusion for the once who are traveling long distances. The document viewer in the smart phone allows you to view all the most popular document formats including Microsoft’s word, PowerPoint and Excel.

Camera:

Blackberry 8120 smartphone is a great multimedia device. This device has a 2 mega pixel camera with 5xzoom and automatic flash. This is an upgradation from its previous Pearl in 1.3 mega pixel. You can adjust the zoom using the central roller bar. The automatic flash feature is especially very useful when in darker surroundings. The image quality of the pictures taken using this camera is amazingly good and the snaps taken in the low light areas also produced a great result. This camera can be used to either capture still pictures or even record videos. The useful setting and option will aid the users to take perfect shots. The video capturing facility is also an upgradation from the previous version which lacked this facility. The small discreet mirror would allow you to take self portraits.

Memory:

Blackberry 8120 has 64 mega bytes of built-in flash memory. The memory can be expanded using the MicroSD Card, with the help of which you will be able to record videos. The separate memory card slot means that you will not need to remove the battery to swap between the memory cards. RIM has included the 3.5mm jack which means you will be able to plug in your favorite pair of head phones.

Battery:

The rechargeable battery of Blackberry Pearl 8120 provides you with a stand-by time of 360 hours or four hours of talk time when fully charged, which is reasonably good. A security password protection feature is available which helps the user to protect their personal information.

RIM has updated Blackberry Pearl in all the required areas in the right manner. The addition of Wi-Fi, flash and video capabilities have made Blackberry more consumer than ever before. It is a great e-mail phone, good one for the business people. On the whole, it is certainly recommended.
